FRANCIS ‘FRANK’ V. DOWNS

Francis “Frank”  Verlarian Downs, 87, of Bardstown, died Oct. 25, 2013, at his home. He was born March 22, 1926, in Bardstown to the late William Wallace and Luella Newton Downs. He was a World War II Army veteran and retired from Jim Beam Distillery. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish and the American Legion.

Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Pearl B. Downs; two sisters, Allie Parkerson and Geri Hatfield; eight brothers, Estill Downs, Leslie Downs, Leo Downs, J.B. Downs, Buck Downs, Junior Downs, Johnny Downs and Leon Downs; and three grandchildren, Patricia Ann Thompson, Jason Thompson and Derek Downs.

He is survived by three daughters, Joan Thompson, Phyllis Spalding and Jennifer Oakley, all of Bardstown; four sons, Francis Downs of Louisville, Dennis Downs and Jeff Downs, both of Bardstown, and Doug Downs of Avon, Fla.; two brothers, Theodore Downs and Billy Downs, both of Bardstown; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hammer will be the celebrant.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, with prayers at 6 p.m., and 8:30-11 a.m. Monday at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home in Bardstown.

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Mass of the Air or Masses for the deceased.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Nelson County and the staff in TCU at Flaget Hospital.
