Election 2014: Candidates begin filing for 2014 campaign season

Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, 7:15 p.m.  — The 2014 election filing season opened Wednesday, Nov. 6, and by the time the Nelson County Clerk’s office closed at 4 p.m. Friday, candidates for sheriff, county attorney and four magisterial districts had filed for office.

NELSON COUNTY SHERIFF. Deputy sheriff Ed Mattingly has filed as a Democrat to run for the office of Nelson County Sheriff. Mattingly is a Bardstown native whose has lived in Bloomfield for 13 years. According to his website, he has been active in law enforcement since 1995.

MAGISTRATE D1. Incumbent 1st District magistrate Keith Metcalfe filed Thursday as a Democratic candidate for his seat on Nelson Fiscal Court. Metcalfe lives on Nat Roger Road and will be running for his second four-year term.

MAGISTRATE D2. Incumbent 2nd District Magistrate Sam Hutchins filed Thursday to keep his office. Hutchins won the 2010 Democratic primary and faced no opposition in the general election.

MAGISTRATE D3. Jeffery A. Cassel of Bardstown filed Thursday as a Republican candidate for 3rd District magistrate. Cassel is a firearms dealer and owner of Kwik Kash Pawn & Gun, 1426 East John Rowan Blvd.

MAGISTRATE D5. Incumbent 5th District magistrate Jerry Hahn filed Thursday as a Democratic candidate to keep his seat on Nelson Fiscal Court. In 2010 Hahn beat Republican challenger Glenn Stone by a slim 55-vote margin. The Plum Run Road resident is seeking is third four-year term on fiscal court.

COUNTY ATTORNEY. County Attorney Matthew Hite filed Thursday as a Democrat seeking to win his first elective office. Hite was appointed county attorney after former County Attorney John Kelley resigned when his son, Jack Kelley, won the election for Nelson District Judge two years ago.

The deadline to file for local partisan offices is 4 p.m. Jan. 28, 2014. The last day voters may register to vote in the May 2014 primary is April 21, 2014. The deadline for voters who wish to change their party registration is Dec. 31, 2013. For questions about your voter registration, contact the Nelson County Clerk’s office, (502) 348-1820.
