Winter storm warning issued as roadways in north part of county ice over

Winter-StormSTAFF REPORT

Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, 4:35 p.m. — Some parts of the roadways in the northern half of Nelson County are already beginning to ice over, according to police officers patrolling the area. Wolf Bridge, which crosses over Cox’s Creek in the new section of US31E north of KY 509, is reported to be slick and hazardous. Highway department crews have been advised.

Roadways in southern parts of the county remain mostly wet. Falling temperatures this afternoon and evening will likely cause wet roadways to freeze. Drivers who plan to travel after dark should be aware of the possibility of icy patches on the roadways this evening.

The National Weather Service upgraded the county to a Winter Storm Warning about an hour ago that expires 7 a.m. Saturday for additional rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow. The wintry mix now falling will transition to snow this evening. Some areas may receive up to 4 inches of snow this evening on top of the current freezing rain and sleet.  An additional period of freezing rain will follow the snow, which may cause an additional light glaze of ice.
