Obituary: Joseph “Joe” Polin Evans, 69, of Cox’s Creek

Joe Evans operated Rooster Run General Store for more than 41 years. The store sold thousands of its trademark hats — featuring a running rooster logo — over the years and was nationally popular.

Joseph “Joe” Polin Evans, 69, of Cox’s Creek, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Flaget Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 1, 1944, in Nelson County. He was a self-employed farmer raising beef cattle and he owned and operated Rooster Run General Store for 41 years. He served as 4th District magistrate on Nelson Fiscal Court for eight years. He was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ.

He is preceded in death by his father, Howard Polin Evans.

He is survived by his wife, Shelia Stone Evans; four daughters, Penny (Jerry) Morris of Anderson, Ind., Katie Jo (Doug Robinson) Evans, Nicole (Jim) Smith and Brooke (Jackie) Pennington-Day, all of Bardstown; his mother, Mary Theresa Carrico Evans of Cox’s Creek; four sisters, Joy Evans of Bardstown, Sandy Adams of Cox’s Creek, Peggy Evans of Florida and Terri Osbourne of Bardstown; three brothers, Martin Evans, Craig Evans and Michael Evans, all of Cox’s Creek; five grandchildren, Billy Joe “BJ” Hall, Evan Hall, Josetta Allen, Mikayla Runner, Kristie Day; two great-grandchildren, Abbi Hall and Tyler Hall; several nieces and nephews and close friends; and Guy Fulkerson and Bruce Howey that were like sons to him.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at First Christian Church (D.O.C.) with burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Dr. Rick Loader will officiate.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, and 9-11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at First Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions go to the First Christian Church Building Fund in memory of Joe Evans.

Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
