STAFF REPORT
Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, 12:03 a.m. — John David “Jack” Seay of Bardstown has filed to keep his seat as circuit judge in the state’s 10th Judicial Circuit that includes Nelson, LaRue and Hart counties. Seay’s candidacy paperwork was received by the Secretary of State’s Office on Wednesday.
FILING DEADLINE APPROACHING. With the deadline to file for county office set for Tuesday, Jan. 28, additional candidates are expected to join those listed below.
JUDGE-EXECUTIVE. Dean Watts (D) and Pete Trzop (R) are the only candidates who have entered the race — so far — for Nelson County judge-executive. Four years ago, Watts defeated fellow Democrat Rob Hamilton in the May Democratic primary, setting up a three-way race in November between Republican Trzop and former magistrate Tim Hutchins, who ran as an independent. Watts won the three-way race with 41 percent of the vote.
COUNTY CLERK. Incumbent Democrat Elaine Filiatreau is the only candidate who has so far filed for the office of Nelson County clerk.
COUNTY ATTORNEY. Democrat Matthew Hite is the only candidate who has filed for county attorney. Hite was appointed county attorney after former County Attorney John Kelley resigned when his son Jack won the election for district judge.
SHERIFF. Democrat Ed Mattingly is the only candidate for sheriff. Sheriff Steve Campbell announced last year he did not intend to seek re-election. Former Republican candidate for sheriff Rick McCubbin, who currently serves as Bardstown Police Chief, announced he did not intend to see the office of sheriff and voiced his support for Mattingly.
JAILER. Incumbent Democrat Dorcas Figg is the only candidate who has filed for jailer.
CORONER. Republican Danielle Chladek is the only candidate who has filed to run for county coroner.
PVA. Incumbent Democrat Barbara Tichenor has filed to retain the office of property valuation administrator. A Republican who passed the required PVA exam has not yet filed for office.
NELSON FISCAL COURT. Incumbent Democrats Keith Metcalfe (D1), Sam Hutchins (D2), Bernard Ice (D3) and Jerry Hahn (D5) have all filed to keep their seats on fiscal court. Republican Jeff Lear, the only Republican on Nelson Fiscal Court, has also filed to keep his seat. So far only Magistrate Bernard Ice has opposition: Republican Jeffrey Cassel of Bardstown has filed for 3rd District magistrate and will face Ice in November.
BARDSTOWN. The only candidate who has filed for office among city officials is Mayor Bill Sheckles. The Bardstown Democrat is seeking his second term.
