Obituary: George Norman Hoffman, 92, Bardstown
George Norman Hoffman, 92, of Bardstown, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, hours after his beloved wife died at Nazareth Home in Louisville.
He was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Louisville to George F. and Anna Mae (Sandman) Hoffman. He graduated from St. Xavier High School and attended the University of Louisville. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served until the end of World War II. He married Viola Florence Schuler on July 24, 1943, at Holy Trinity Church in St. Matthews. They lived in St. Matthews until 195,4 when they moved to Bardstown and he established Hoffman Distributing Company.
He was active in the Jaycees, Optimist Club and Knights of Columbus. He was chairman of the board of Bethlehem High School, chairman of the board of Flaget Hospital, a member of the Bardstown- Nelson County Chamber of Commerce, a trustee of St. Joseph Parish, and a long time Bardstown City Council member. In addition to his civic involvement, he sponsored and supported numerous local sports programs.
His interest included the Quarterback Club and playing golf. He was an avid UofL football and basketball fan. He had a fierce loyalty to Notre Dame football, having attended his first home game in South Bend, Ind. in 1937.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Martha Eve; and one brother, Don Hoffman.
He is survived by four daughters, Kathy (Woody) Hahn of Hodgenville; Carolyn (Chet) Miller of Littleton, Colo; Mary (Alex) Hamilton of Louisville; Virginia (Ginna) Schroeder of St. Louis; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Prot-Cathedral in Bardstown. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home in Bardstown.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral or Bethlehem High School.
