Election 2014: Candidates for May 20th primary set

Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, 4:45 p.m. — The field is set for the county races in the May primary.

The Democratic nominee in three county races will be decided in the May 20 primary election:

NELSON COUNTY SHERIFF. A three-way primary race between Ed Mattingly, Brooks Houck and Kenny Downs will determine which candidate will go on to face Republican J.T. “Thomas” Fulkerson in the Nov. 4, 2014 election.

NELSON COUNTY CLERK. Incumbent Elaine Filiatreau faces Jeanette Hall Sidebottom in the primary. The winning candidate faces no Republican opposition in the general election.

MAGISTRATE DISTRICT 4. David Shields and Bobby Settles — both candidates for this office four years ago — will square off in the May primary. The winner will face incumbent Republican Jeff Lear.

50th DISTRICT STATE REPRESENTATIVE. While incumbent Republican David Floyd faces no primary opponent, he will face Bardstown attorney Audrey Haydon in the November general election.

COUNTY OFFICES. Several incumbents face no primary opposition in their races, though some have a Republican challenger.

JUDGE-EXECUTIVE. Incumbent Democrat Dean Watts has no primary challenger, and will face Republican Pete Trzop in the November election.

COUNTY ATTORNEY. Democrat Matthew Hite faces no opposition in the May primary.

JAILER. Dorcas Figg has no primary challenger, and no Republican opponent in the general election.

COUNTY CORONER. Incumbent Democrat Field Houghlin has no primary opponent, and will face Republican Danielle Chladek in November.

MAGISTRATE DISTRICT 1. Democratic incumbent Keith Metcalfe has no primary opponent and will face Republican David L. Reed in November.

MAGISTRATE DISTRICT 3. Incumbent Democrat Bernard Ice has no primary opponent, but faces Republican Jeffrey A. Cassel in November.

MAGISTRATE 2 & 5. District 2 Sam Hutchins and District 5 Magistrate Jerry Hahn have no opposition in the primary, and none so far in the November general election.

PROPERTY VALUATION ADMINISTRATOR. With no primary challenger, incumbent Democrat Barbara Tichenor faces Republican Donna Molyneaux in November.

There were no filings for the offices of county surveyor or constable.

Candidates who wish to run as an independent must file a statement of candidacy with the Nelson County Clerk’s office by April 1, 2014, and must complete their candidacy filing by 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014.
