Obituary: John Donald ‘Johny’ Bryan Sr., 84, New Haven

John Donald “Johny” Bryan Sr., 84, of New Haven, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, peacefully at his home.

JOHN DONALD ‘JOHNY’ BRYAN SR.

He was a Catholic by faith, and a member of St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Military Police during the Korean War. He retired from the Nelson County Board of Education after working as a janitor at the New Haven School. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years. He graciously gave of his time to the New Haven Optimist Ball Park alongside his wife Evelyn. They could be found in the concession stand most any time.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Evelyn Gant Bryan; his parents, Joseph Emmanuel and Emma Elizabeth Mattingly Bryan; one sister, Elizabeth Smith; four brothers, Felix “Teddy Bear” Bryan, Logue Bryan, Charlie Bryan, and Gerald Bryan; and one granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Ritchie.

He is survived by three daughters, Annie Bryan, Mary Bryan and Jackie Ritchie (Scott); one son, John Bryan (Carole); his twin brother, James R. “Jimmy” Bryan (Tootie); and four grandchildren, Joshua Bryan, Abby Ritchie, Kayla Bryan and Taylor Bryan.

A Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in New Haven with the Rev. Ken Fortener presiding. Burial is in the church cemetery with the Marion County Honor Guard providing military honors.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, and 8-9:30 a.m. at the Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home in New Haven with a 6 p.m. prayer service Monday.
