Democratic candidate for sheriff Kenny Downs withdraws from race

Tuesday, March 18, 2014, 3:30 p.m. — Kenny Downs, a Democratic candidate for sheriff from Bardstown, has withdrawn from the race.

Even though Downs has withdrawn from the race, his name will still appear on the May 20 primary ballot, according to deputy clerk Kim Bryan in the elections office at the Nelson County Clerk’s Office.

“His name will be on the ballot, but we won’t count any votes he gets,” Bryan said. “We won’t even look at them.”

Downs currently serves as police chief of Bloomfield.

Downs entered the race just hours before the filing deadline on Jan. 28. His move to leave the race leaves two Democratic candidates for sheriff to face-off in the primary: Brooks Houck and Ed Mattingly.

The Democratic nominee will face Republican J.T.”Thomas” Fulkerson Jr. in the November general election.
