Letter urges Kentucky senate to act quickly on eminent domain bill

To the editor:

Do we live in a democracy? The dictionary defines a democracy as a form of letter-to-the-editorgovernment in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

The passage of HB 31 by the House was an indication of democracy at work – a case of private property rights versus corporate interests. This bill prohibits the use of eminent domain by developers of hazardous natural gas liquids pipelines.

We are landowners who want to protect our land from a pipeline we don’t want and a pipeline that won’t serve Kentuckians. Williams and Boardwalk Pipeline Partners Inc. have resources to attack beyond our ability to defend. If our voices are heard, as in a true democracy, we believe HB 31 should quickly go to the Senate Judiciary Committee and then brought to the Senate floor for a vote.

According to Rep. David Floyd, “The issue is the private property rights of every citizen of this state.” We are asking you to e-mail (www.lrc.ky.gov/whoswho/email.htm) or call (800) 372-7181 members of the Senate today asking them to bring HB 31 to committee this week and support its passage.
