Tuesday, April 15, 2014, 8:45 a.m. — Interim Boston School Principal Dana Cull was named permanently to the job of the principal by the school’s site-based council in a special meeting Monday evening.
Cull, a 30-year resident of Boston, started her teaching career at Cox’s Creek Elementary School, where she taught fourth grade from 1997 through 2004. She went on to teach fourth through sixth grades at Boston School for the five years before accepting a position as an Instructional Coach in the Nelson County Schools system. She returned to Boston last summer to serve as interim principal.
“I feel like I’ve come home again,” Cull said. “When I came back to Boston, it was exciting to me. It’s my home. My community. I worked here as a teacher and now I get the privilege to come back and lead.”
Superintendent Anthony Orr said Cull proved herself a good fit for the job while serving as interim principal.
“As a Boston resident and former Boston School teacher, Ms. Cull combines both the expertise and hometown wisdom that make her a great fit for our students, school and community,” Orr said.
But even before all of those years of professional accomplishment, Cull was already building her Boston School resume´.
“I can remember bringing my oldest child (now 27) to kindergarten at the old Boston School,” she said. “All my children went to Boston – they played basketball, little league … I have deep roots here.”
As for her plans for the coming year, Cull said the theme will be “challenge.”
With her biggest focus to be on instruction, Cull said she plans to revamp the eighth-grade curriculum to include more college and career readiness initiatives.
