Victims at Botland home identified as outpourings of grief hit social media

Wednesday, April 23, 2014, 1 a.m. — The Kentucky State Police confirmed late Tuesday that the adult victim found dead at her Botland home was Kathy Netherland, 48. Her body was accompanied by that of a 16-year-old female juvenile whose name was not released. Sources have identified the second victim as Netherland’s daughter,  Samantha Netherland.

According to the state police press release, autopsies on the bodies will be conducted Wednesday morning at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville.  The KSP is still on the scene investigating the incident, and have only confirmed the deaths were the result of foul play.

Kathy Netherland was a teacher at Bardstown Elementary School. Not long after word of her and her daughter’s deaths spread into the community, Netherland’s Facebook page began filling with posts expressing grief from her friends, co-workers and the parents whose children Netherland taught.

Netherland’s own social media posts recount her husband’s battle with colon cancer, a battle he lost in July 2013, as well as her own struggles to deal with the loss of her husband.

The KSP is being assisted by the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, Nelson County EMS and the Nelson County Coroner.
