Obituary: Mary Ruth Ball Greenwell, 91, Culvertown

MARY RUTH BALL GREENWELL

Mary Ruth Ball Greenwell, 91, of Culvertown, died early Saturday morning, May 10, 2014, peacefully at her home. She was born in Culvertown on July 24, 1922. In addition to part of her childhood spent at a family farm in Fairfield and stints she and her husband took to Harlingen, Texas, she called Culvertown home. She was a Catholic by faith and a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was a founder and member of the Immaculate Conception Altar Society, a member and one of the first organizers of the Culvertown Bereavement committee, a former member of Culvertown Senior Citizens, and co-founder of the church bingo. She was a 44-year member and the first president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 121 in Bardstown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Sophia Hall Ball; her husband, Woodrow Greenwell; two sons, Lincoln and Kevin Greenwell; her siblings, Helen Rogers, Bertel Ball, Coahran Ball, Link Ball, Leo Ball, Wetzel Ball and Francis Ball Jr.; two sons-in-law, Jimmy Sweeney and PR Seward; and one grandson, Jeremy McCoy.

She is survived by 15 children, Louise and Bobby Brussell, Beverly and Buddy Keith, and Mary Beth and Timmy Higdon, all of Culvertown, Kenny and Linda Greenwell of Louisville, Carolyn and Sonny Greenwell, Mary Ellen and Butch McCoy, Dwight and Pat Greenwell, Hazel Greenwell Seward, Tammi and David Nalley, and Coletta Greenwell Akin, all of New Haven, Warren and LeAnn Greenwell of Gilbert, Ariz., Eric and Elaine Greenwell and Dick and Melissa Greenwell, all of Bardstown, LaDonna and Steve Barbour of Midland, Texas, and Leora and Denny Doyle of Birch Run Mich.; her sister and brother in laws, Billy and Verna Greenwell, Irene Greenwell and Norma Lou Ball Ballard; 41 grandchildrenl, 43 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Culvertown with the Rev. Troy Overton officiating. Burial is in the St. Thomas Cemetery.

Visitation is 12-8 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, and 8-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home in New Haven with a Rosary at noon Monday, an American Legion Auxiliary service at 6:30 p.m. and a Catholic prayer service at 7 p.m.

Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Michael Doyle, Paul Brussell, Charles Greenwell, Darren Greenwell, Chad Greenwell, Chris Sweeny, Blake Greenwell and Chris Nalley. The placing of the pall will be done by her granddaughters, Cheryl Metcalf, Leslie Greenwell, Airy Ann Tatum, Amy McCoy, Rita Greenwell, Jennifer Brown. The rest of the grandchildren will participate as honorary pallbearers.
