Obituary: Col. Harold V. Walsh, 85, of Howardstown, formerly of Ventnor, N.J.

Col. Harold V. Walsh, 85, of Howardstown, formerly of Ventnor, N.J., died Thursday, May 22, 2014. He was born in Philadelphia to the late Rosemary (O’Neill) and Harold Walsh, Sr.

He was a 1950 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He was a career U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and a Korean War veteran with over 100 combat missions. He retired as Commander of the 177th Fighter Interceptor Group of the New Jersey Air National Guard. He was devoted to his Catholic faith and was the epitome of a true Christian steward, receiving God’s gifts gratefully, cultivating them responsibly, and sharing them lovingly in justice with others.

He was preceded in death by one son Brian Walsh; one sister, Rosemary Stephens; and one granddaughter, Ellen Marie.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Patricia (Flavin) Walsh; eight children, Kevin Walsh (Ellen), Jamie Walsh, Sean Walsh (Christine), Rosemary Walsh, Padraic Walsh (Deidre), Hal Walsh (Suzanne), Kathleen Walsh, and Tricia Rafter (Tom); one sister, Ruthann Salinger (Artie); one brother, David Walsh (Marilyn); and 12 grandchildren, Erin Walsh, Colleen Walsh, Kelli Walsh, Sean Walsh, Brian Walsh, Sean Kathleen Curran, Alexandra Curran, Rachel Walsh, Ryan Schnarre, Megan Rafter, Erin Rafter and Tommy Rafter.

Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Harry Witzke’s Family Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, Md.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, at St. Louis Catholic Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike/Route 108, Clarksville, Md. A reception will be held at the parish social hall followed by burial in the church cemetery on Ten Oaks Road in Clarksville, Md.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Hal’s memory can be made to Food For The Poor (www.foodforthepoor.org).

The Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home in New Haven is in charge of local arrangements.
