Wednesday, June 4, 2014, 11 p.m. — Former Cox’s Creek Elementary School teacher Angie Taylor was selected to serve as that school’s new principal. The action came Wednesday at a meeting of the school’s site-based council.
Taylor follows Dr. Jan Lanham, who has announced her retirement as principal at Cox’s Creek and a 39-year career as an educator. Lanham took over as principal 11 years ago after Dr. Mary Ann Chamberlain retired.
Taylor returns to the Nelson County Schools system following eight years as principal of elementary schools in Winchester.
“In talking with Angie, the first thing you notice is her enthusiasm and her focus on kids,” commented Nelson County Schools Superintendent Anthony Orr. “Then I hear her a deep experience come through and an ability to build empowerment and student focus.”
Taylor describes herself as a “big hands on learner,” and a history buff.
She describes elementary school as a place where children learn valuable life skills while gaining their foundation for learning in later years. During her career as an educator, she has taught all elementary grades from kindergarten through fifth.
While a third grade teacher at Cox’s Creek (2001-2003), she implemented the Junior Great Books supplemental reading program, along with an economics unit that incorporated community resources.
“It was a community kind of hands on unit incorporating math and social studies,” Taylor said. In it, her students secured a loan from Wilson and Muir Bank to create a manufacturing company of sorts and raise money for the Humane Society in Nelson County.
