Police: Woman arrested for raising money for son’s non-existent illness
Thursday, June 5, 2014, 5 p.m. — A Bardstown woman was arrested Thursday collecting thousands of dollars fraudulently by claiming her 12-year-old son had cancer.
Nancye Beth Avis, 39, was charged with theft by deception under $10,000 following an investigation by Bardstown Police into her claim her son had cancer. Police say several fundraisers were held for the family during the past two years.
The police investigation revealed Avis’ son has never had cancer. Police are working on the continuing investigation with the Child Protection Branch of the state’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
