Obituary: Irene Bowman, 90, Cox’s Creek

Irene Bowman, 90, of Cox’s Creek, died Sunday, July 6, 2014, at her home. She was the former Irene Martin and was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Spencer County. She received her Associate’s degree from Western Kentucky College and fun_angeltaught for three years in Spencer County in a one-room schoolhouse. She was also a homemaker, farmer, and a member of New Salem Baptist Church where she was the director of the Junior Department for more than 50 years. She was also a former choir member, served on various committees, and worked Vacation Bible School for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Walter Bowman; her parents, Joseph Forrest and Martha Redman Martin; 14 brothers and sisters; and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by one daughter, M. Walene (Bobby) Hardin of Cox’s Creek; one son, Larry (Brenda) Bowman of Cox’s Creek; two brothers, Benny Floyd “B.F.” (Betty) Martin of Taylorsville and Weldon (Shirley) Martin of Louisville; four grandchildren, Karen Bradshaw, Tracy St.Clair, Eric Bowman and Tad Bowman; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral is 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at New Salem Baptist Church. Her nephew Steve Martin will officiate. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, and Wednesday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the church.

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the New Salem Baptist Church Building Fund.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
