Obituary: Maurice T. ‘Buddy’ Hays, 90, Pleasant Run
Maurice T. “Buddy” Hays, 90, of Pleasant Run, a well-known farmer and horseman in Marion County, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the Village of Lebanon. He was born Dec. 2, 1923, to Clella and Charlie Hays in the Pleasant Run community and he remained a lifelong resident. He attended the Pleasant Run School and was a member of Pleasant Run Methodist Church until it closed. He then became a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church.
Following his high school graduation, he married high school sweetheart Susan Glazebrook and established himself as a fourth-generation landowner on the family farm on the Shortline Pike in eastern Marion County. It was here that he put into practice lessons learned as a charter member of the Lebanon High School Future Farmers of America Club. He enjoyed sharing his garden produce with his many friends and family as well as raising livestock and horses. The offspring of his Tennessee Walkers and Standard bred pacers are found on many farms throughout Central Kentucky.
Maurice was an avid reader and storyteller. He brought past characters and events to life through his humorous anecdotal stories of family, neighbors, and friends. His stories will be shared from generation to generation, along with countless childhood memories of truck rides in the creek, drives on his Moline tractor, and adventures on the farm.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Christine Hays Lawson, and his wife of 71 years, Susan Glazebrook Hays.
Survivors include two daughters, Lynda (Clyde) Tharp of Shelbyville and Janet (Kenn) Johnson of Mount Sterling; one son, Edward (Pat) Hays of Danville; six grandchildren, Heather (Troy) Hood, Kyle (Jaime) Tharp, Julie (John) Gragg, Ben (Blake) Hays, Lindsay (Troy) Porcelli and Rory (Aaron) Gruler; 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted caregivers, plus a loyal farm employee of 40 years, Gary Reardon.
