Obituary: Leo W. Corbett, 94, of Bardstown

LEO W. CORBETT

Leo W. Corbett, 94, of Bardstown, died July 17, 2014 at the Episcopal Church Home located on Westport Road in Louisville. He had lived at the Episcopal Home since February 2013. He was born in Louisville but moved to Bardstown with his family when he was 17. He attended St. Joe Preparatory School from 1939 to 1940 where he played center for the St. Joe Prep basketball team that went to the state championship game in 1940. In 1940 Leo received a scholarship to attend the Kentucky Military Institute where he also played basketball. After two years he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp and served almost two years before he was injured in World War II. After being discharged from the Air Corp he returned to Bardstown and married Martha LaVerne Hall in 1944.

He and LaVerne spent most of their married life living at their home on 5th Street. He was a life long member of the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years. He worked at the Kentucky Standard Publishing Co. for more than 30 years as a printer and linotype operator. He was a devoted husband and father who was known for his positive attitude, captivating smile, sense of humor, and passion for gardening.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Horace (Hardy) Corbett, Eleanor (Corbett) Hendershott, and Joseph Corbett.

Leo is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, LaVerne Hall Corbett who also resides at the Episcopal Church Home; two daughters, Karlton Corbett Ballard (Leon) and Sr. Katherine Corbett, OSU of the Louisville Ursuline Sisters; one son, Rob Corbett (Dr. Kathleen Corbett); seven grandchildren and seven-great grandchildren, Richard Ballard and son Corbett, Ben Corbett (Tara) and children Ella and Toby, Colin Corbett Fathergill (David) and daughter, Nyssa, Casey Corbett Fein (Scott), and daughter, Sylvie, Kely Corbett Chappell, (Aaron), and daughter Zoey, Timothy Corbett and son Kai, and youngest granddaughter, Kristen Corbett.

The funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto Cathedral in with the Rev. Bill Hammer officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2014 and 9:30-10:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the funeral home.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society.

The Barlow Funeral Home in Bardstown is in charge of arrangements.
