Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, 2:45 a.m. — There were some anxious moments in downtown Bardstown when a fire was reported at the Old Talbott Tavern early Saturday morning. The Bardstown Fire Department, Nelson County EMS and Bardstown Police units were dispatched to the tavern at 1:48 a.m. for a fire on the bar side (west side) of the building.
The first Bardstown Police officers on scene helped make sure overnight guests were safely out of the building. One of the officers reported the fire was contained to a light fixture in the bar and that it appeared to be out. Firefighters arrived, removed the fixture and used their equipment to remove smoke from the building. Guests were allowed back in the building after about 30 minutes.
The roof and second floor of the Tavern were mostly destroyed in an early morning Saturday fire back on March 7, 1998. The Tavern’s future was in peril and the community pulled together to help donate money to aid in it reconstruction. The building was repaired and reopened for business on in November 1999.
