Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, 11:30 a.m. — Nelson Fiscal Court voted Tuesday morning to keep the county property tax rate the same for this year’s tax bills — 14.3 cents per hundred dollars value.

Nelson County Judge Executive Dean Watts introduced the proposed tax levies noting the county was not going to take the 4 percent revenue increase it is allowed to by state law, which would have raised the tax rate to 14.8 cents per hundred and generated an additional $121,748. The compensating rate generates about the same amount of revenue as the previous year’s tax rate.

Other tax rates largely stayed the same; the tangible personal property rate fell from 16.1 to 15.4 cents per hundred dollars value.

The court will hold second reading on the tax rate at its Aug. 19 meeting.

In other action, Nelson Fiscal Court:

— accepted the annual treasurer’s settlement for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013. Treasurer Rhonda Fenwick’s reported carrying over approximately $500,000 from last year’s budget, with year-end bank balances of $3.2 million in cash and investments totaling $4.4 million.

— accepted a return of excess fees of $41,967.15 from Joint City-County Planning Commission member Mary Ellen Marquess. Watts explained that county government pays the planning commission salaries and expenses, and then goes to the participating cities and gets reimbursement for their share of those expenses.

— heard from County Engineer Jim Lemieux that work to raise the new communications tower near the Nelson County Industrial Park will begin Wednesday.

— took no action on an agreement on a lease agreement with 4-H Shooting Sports to use the county-owned old quarry on Quarry Lane for shooting events. Watts said there are some additional details that need to be added to the agreement.
