Tuesday, Aug 12, 2014, 11:54 p.m.  — Bardstown businessman Tim Hutchins completed his filing as an independent candidate for Nelson County judge executive just minutes before the 4 o’clock deadline Tuesday afternoon.

Hutchins told the Nelson County Gazette he plans to run a vigorous campaign in what is now a three-way race. Hutchins faces incumbent Democrat Judge Executive Dean Watts and Republican candidate Pete Trzop in the Nov. 4 general election.

This year’s three-way race is a repeat of the race four years ago, when Watts came out on top.

After filing his candidate paperwork, Hutchins pointed to his 17 years of experience as 4th District magistrate and his many years of managing successful businesses as reasons he is a qualified candidate for judge executive.

Jack Hurst, the Bardstown businessman who also filed as an independent candidate for judge executive, did not file a completed petition Tuesday in order be on the November ballot.

11 FILE FOR BARDSTOWN CITY COUNCIL. An additional filing for Bardstown City Council brought that total to 11 candidates vying for the council’s six seats.

Jimmy Arnold of Bardstown filed Friday for a seat on the Bardstown City Council. Arnold previously lost by only six votes in his last run for a council seat.

In addition to incumbents Roland Williams, Bobby Simpson, Francis Lydian and Joe Buckman, former councilman Fred Hagan — who left the council two years ago — has filed to return to the council. The other council candidates include county Republican party chairman Robert Augustine; Maple Hill residents Richard Nest and Kecia Copeland; former Bardstown Police officer Bill Buckman, and Terry Wayne Cantrell.

BARDSTOWN MAYOR. Incumbent Mayor Bill Sheckles will face Councilman John Royalty in a two-way race for mayor in November. Sheckles won the four-way race for mayor that included Royalty four years ago.

BLOOMFIELD. Mayor Rhonda Hagan is the only candidate on the November ballot in Bloomfield. Two candidates — incumbents Denny Howard and Laura Barnett — field for the six Bloomfield City Council seats. If write-in candidates do not file in the race, the remaining four seats will be appointed after the election.

FAIRFIELD. Former Fairfield city commissioner Angela Ford filed for the office of mayor on Monday. Incumbent commissioners Donald R. Hardin, Shirly Mattingly and Faye Clayton filed for re-election, and Paul J. Kiener means there are four candidates for the four city commission seats.

NEW HAVEN. Three have filed for the four seats on the New Haven board of commissioners: Jane Masse, Chris Cecil and Mike Morris. No one filed for the office of New Haven mayor.

SCHOOL BOARDS. On the Bardstown Board of Education, three incumbents face no opposition for another term. James R. Roby, Kathy Reed and Jennifer Shrewsbury will receive another term on the city school board.

Nicky Rapier and board chairman Frank Hall are not seeking re-election to the Nelson County Board of Education in November. David Norman of New Haven will represent the 1st District on the county school board; Diane Marie Breeding will replace Rapier as the 4th District’s school board representative.
