NCHS sophomore Macy Hagan recites the FFA creed Tuesday evening during the monthly meeting of the Nelson County Board of Education.

Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, 9 p.m. — The Nelson County Board of Education took time to extend its thanks to the staff at Cox’s Creek Elementary School who pitched in to get the building ready for the first day of school.

The school underwent substantial HVAC renovations during the summer, and there the project managers were nervous when questioned by the board in July if the building would be ready for the first day of classes. Once the contractors completed their work, the district’s custodians and the school staff went in to get the building ready.

“It was really some extraordinary work, a massive project that kept Cox’s Creek tied up all summer,” Superintendent Anthony Orr told the board. “It wasn’t until right before school we got in to put things back in their proper places.”

The board recognized the entire staff who took part in the preparation work. “From cooks to custodians to instructional staff, it was a remarkable transformation,” Orr said.

A group of Cox’s Creek teachers and staff attended the meeting and gathered for a photo with the board.

OTHER DISTRICT PROJECTS. Todd Sanders, director of physical support services, and maintenance supervisor Kevin Mattingly updated the board on the HVAC work at Nelson County High School, which is mostly complete.

There are some control programming issues remaining at NCHS, as well as some wiring to complete the projects at Bloomfield Elementary, Boston and OKH, Mattingly explained. “The big contractors are done, its just tieing up the final parts,” he said.

STUDENT RECOGNITION. FFA member and NCHS sophomore Macy Hagan was recognized by the board for her participation at FFA competitive events over the summer. She recited the FFA creed before the board.

In other action, the board

— heard an update from district Chief Operating Officer Tim Hockensmith on the pre-audit for the districts’ annual financial report;

— approved revisions to the district’s Gifted and Talented Handbook.
