Mom accused of falsely claiming son had cancer is indicted Wednesday

1_indictmentThursday, Aug. 21, 2014, 10 a.m. — The Bardstown mother who police say falsely claimed her son had cancer was indicted Wednesday by a Nelson County grand jury for theft by deception.

Nancye B. Avis, 39, allegedly told St. Joseph School and other organizations her son had cancer, and several fundraisers were held for her son over a two-year period. She was indicted Wednesday on a single charge of theft by decption over $500 but less than $10,000. Avis also faces a single charge of endangering the welfare of a minor.

Bail was set at $25,000. She will be arraigned Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, in Nelson Circuit Court.
