Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014 a.m. — Tonight the Bardstown City Council will consider municipal orders canceling the city’s agreements with the county regarding the city’s monetary contributions to city-county recreation programs and the county’s E-911 Dispatch center.
In earlier discussions it was clear that the main issue is fairness to city taxpayers.
Bardstown residents pay both city and county taxes. The City’s payment of $368,000 of the total $494,000 recreation budget means City taxpayers subsidize the recreation program for county taxpayers, who only pay county taxes. City taxpayers are effectively taxed twice for the same programs available to all county residents.
The draft 911 agreement cancellation notes the city pays 40 percent of the E-911 Dispatch Board costs not covered by the E-911 fees and says the current agreement is “not equitable to the residents of Bardstown.” City taxpayers receive the same E-911 service as county taxpayers.
Each of the cancellations also request the county begin negotiations to create “a new agreement that will provide equal treatment of all residents of Bardstown and Nelson County.”
The council meets at 7 p.m. tonight in the council chambers on Xavier Drive.
