Obituary: Charles R. Goodin, 89, Lebanon

Charles R. Goodin, 89, of Lebanon, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at his home surrounded by family. He was born July 9, 1925, in Lebanon to J. Lee Goodin and Alma Abell Goodin

He graduated from St. Augustine High School and attended the University of Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Army in the armored division at Fort Hood, Texas, during the Korean War. After the war he returned to Lebanon. His commitment to the community spanned his lifetime.

He was an active member of St. Augustine Parish having served on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Lebanon Kiwanis Club, and a 60-year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce and served for a time on its board of directors. He assisted in the re-establishment of the Marion County Fair, and was instrumental in procuring funds for the Marion County Public Library and served on its board as chairman. He served 10 years as a member of the Lebanon City Council. He was on the advisory board of the old St. Mary’s College and St. Catharine College, and on the University of Kentucky Alumni Board of Directors. In 1972 hee was recognized for his community service with the Outstanding Citizen Award, and in 1995 the Sam C. May Outstanding Service Award.

He was the chairman emeritus of Citizens National Bank and served on its board of directors for 55 years. He co-owned Lebanon Oak Flooring with his brother, Robert Goodin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elinor; two sisters, Nancy Goodin (Jack) Lovett,and Evelyn Goodin (Ben) Crume; and three brothers, Thomas A. Goodin, John R. Goodin and James F. Goodin.

Survivors include seven daughters, Rose (Doc) Barsotti of Ellwood City, Penn., Laura Lee (Joe) Abell of Tullahoma, Tenn., Elinor (Jerry) Hill of Lexington, Evelyn (Frank) Spalding of Richmond, Karen (Mike) Whitehouse of Fort Wright, Susan Goodin of Cranford, N.J., and Marian (Kevin) DeMoss of Lexington; three sons, Don (Carol) Goodin of Louisville, Charles Goodin Jr. and Thomas Goodin, both of Lebanon; two sisters, Marita Goodin (Clem) Hill and Alma Goodin (Joe) Elder; one brother, Robert L. Goodin; 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, at the Bosley Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with Deacon Joe Dant.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Community Service Center, P.O. Box 37, Lebanon, o St. Augustine School.

The Bosley Funeral Home in Lebanon is in charge of arrangement.
