Saturday, April 23, 2011, 10:45 a.m. — A line of severe thunderstorms dropped upward of 3 inches of rain across Nelson County late Friday night into early Saturday morning. A weather station in the Greenbrier area recorded 2.44 inches of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Other areas reported up to 3 inches of rain.

The National Weather Service issued a series of severe thunderstorm warnings for Nelson County beginning about 1 a.m., focusing on southern parts of Nelson County. As one thunderstorm warning expired, a new one was issued, with the last warning that expired at 3:15 a.m.

The storms that rolled through Nelson County prompted severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings in the adjacent counties of Marion and Washington as they pushed east.

FLOODING. The weather service also issued a Flood Warning for the Rolling Fork at Boston due to the recent heavy rains. The Rolling Fork is expected to rise above flood stage (35 feet) Saturday evening and rise to near 44.6 feet by Tuesday. Moderate flooding is expected.

Eyewitnesses say the Beech Fork River is rising quickly out of its banks as well, and some flooding of roadways can be expected, especially in the Burba Road area and near the Avon Fogle bridge on KY 49.

HEAVY RAIN, WINDS. The weather conditions contributed to a number of non-injury accidents overnight. Reports of trees and tree limbs being blown down were also received by Nelson County Dispatch, including one that fell on Templin Avenue near its intersection with KY 245.
