Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, 12:30 p.m. — A Bardstown man was arrested and charged with burglary after he broke into the Lincoln National Bank early Monday morning.

At about 5 a.m. Monday, Bardstown Police responded to an alarm at the bank, located at 500 Lincoln Way. Police arrived to find a silver Kia passenger car and broken glass. Police entered the bank and found Ronald G. Newberry, 61, hiding behind a Christmas tree in the bank.

Newberry was armed with a 9mm Beretta handgun located in a duffel bag he carried into the bank. Police believe Newberry used the Beretta to shoot the lock on the bank’s door and break glass. Newberry was also in possession of several silver coins and bars he brought to the bank.

Police believe Newberry first drove through the drive-through, and after not receiving attention from a teller, he walked to the door and used the handgun to gain entry to the bank.

According to a police press release, Newberry had several AK-47-style ammunition magazines in his car.

Newberry was lodged in the Nelson County Jail.
