Tim Beck and Kim Brown discuss details of the districts comprehensive improvement plan with the Nelson County Board of Education at its meeting Tuesday evening.

Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, 7 p.m. — The Nelson County Board of Education unanimously approved its Comprehensive District Improvement Plan (CDIP) for 2014-15 at its meeting Tuesday evening.

Tim Beck, director of elementary schools, and Kim Brown, director of secondary schools, reviewed the final portions of the plan at the meeting as part of a review of the plan began at an earlier board meeting. The final portions focused on college and career readiness.

Brown said meetings are being conducted individually with high school to see what they are interested in doing in life. The district is working to create more opportunities for students to intern or work co-op at area businesses, and will work closely with the Nelson County Area Technical Center.

DISTRICT LOGO. The board unanimously approved a new district logo unveiled by Superintendent Anthony Orr.

The board approved a new district logo that features the silhouette of a student with a raised hand. The logo features NCHS red and TNHS blue.

The logo includes a silhouette of a student with hand raised, which Orr said is a symbol of student engagement. “I think ‘Expect the Best’ is a great way to capture the expectations of the Nelson County Schools,” he said.

Orr explained that the district’s existing logo has been closely identified with Nelson County High School and featured the school’s red and blue colors. The new logo uses colors that represent both high schools — the red from the Nelson County High School Cardinals, and the blue of the Thomas Nelson High School Generals.

The logo can use blue or red as the dominant color. A set of logos in black and white was also approved by the board.

CALENDAR. The board approved the 2015-16 school calendar as well as the board’s meeting schedule for 2015. The board meetings will continue to be at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays with working sessions on Thursdays. The work sessions are being moved to 5 p.m. due in part to the work schedules of the incoming board members.

COMMUNICATIONS AWARD. Communications Director Tom Dekle was honored by the Kentucky School Board Association with the Outstanding Achievement in School Information Services award for the district’s public relations efforts.

KSBA representative Brad Hughes noted that this is the district’s fourth consecutive win, a feat that has been matched by only one other district in the past 20 years.
