Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, 10:30 p.m. — The Bardstown man who broke into the Bardstown branch of the Lincoln National Bank earlier this month was indicted Wednesday by a Nelson County grand jury.

Ronald G. Newberry, 61, was indicted on charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief and possession of cocaine. Newberry’s arraignment is set for 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015.

Responding to an alarm call at 5 a.m. on Dec. 1, Bardstown Police found Newberry inside the bank hiding behind a Christmas tree. Newberry’s car was parked outside the bank.

Police say Newberry was armed with a 9mm Beretta handgun located in a duffel bag he carried into the bank. Police believe Newberry used the Beretta to shoot the lock on the bank’s door and break glass. Newberry also possessed several silver coins and silver bars that he brought to the bank.

Authorities believe Newberry first drove through the drive-through, and after not receiving attention from a teller because the bank was not open, he walked to the door and used the handgun to gain entry to the bank.

Newberry’s bail was set at $100,000 cash only, plus conditions.
