Obituary: Hollis Stoner Wolfe Keene, 98, Bardstown

HOLLIS STONER WOLFE KEENE

Hollis Stoner Wolfe Keene, 98, of Bardstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, at the Masonic Home of Shelbyville. She was born Hollis Lindley Stoner on Nov. 22, 1916, the second child of Eva Belle and Thomas Stoner of Jeffersonville, Ind.

She was raised in Jeffersonville, Ind., and graduated from Jeffersonville High School. She graduated from Norton Hospital’s Nursing School as a registered nurse in 1936. She had an active and involved life. She served as an RN in the U.S. Navy during World War II and achieved the rank of lieutenant. She predominantly served at the San Diego Naval Hospital as a trauma surgery nurse, working with injured soldiers returning from the Pacific Theater. She was honorably discharged and returned to Jeffersonville where she worked as a home health nurse with the Visiting Nurses Association for decades before moving to Bardstown upon her marriage to Twyman Keene.

In her private life she was active in church, Psi Iota Xi, and with the Bardstown Garden and Homemaker’s Clubs. She enjoyed spending time with family, reading, bridge, Scrabble, gardening and travel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three siblings; and two husbands, Arbra Warring Wolfe and Twyman Francis Keene.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Warring (Beth) Wolfe and Richard Arbra (Elizabeth) Wolfe; sister, Ruth Stoner Hill; one sister-in-law, Jackie Stoner; one brother-in-law, Bernie Keene; three grandchildren, Emily Elizabeth Wolfe, Ian Thomas Wolfe, and Eric Christian Richard Wolfe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral was 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Dr. Rick Loader officiating. Burial was in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
