Bruce Reynolds, city attorney, explained the reason for the new policy designed to protect sensitive customer data.

Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, 11:30 — The Bardstown City Council unanimously approved Tuesday night a new policy regarding the safety of its customers personal information.

According to Mike Abell, the city’s chief financial officer, the new policy is required by state statute, and will be implemented during the coming year.

“The statute requires us to have a policy in place, and we will have a year to get the procedures in place,” he said.

The policy offers guidance on the best practices and procedures to insure the safety of  customer’s personal data, which can include name, address, phone number, and payment information.

‘It’s an awareness of what you should and should not do,” city attorney Bruce Reynolds told the council. “It doesn’t change government transparency, but protects that information.”
