GEORGE WILLIAM EVANS

George William Evans, 88, of Lebanon, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014. He was born Jan. 6, 1926, in Marion County. He was a Petty Officer in the Communication division as a signal man with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged in early 1946. Later that year he went to work for Electric & Gas Company at the downtown Main Street firm. He stayed with the firm until December 1964. At this time he moved across the street as manager of Jones Hardware Company that had just recently been purchased by Peterson Brothers of Lebanon, owners of Peterson Lumber Company. Sometime later, Evans bought half interest in the firm still later to buy Peterson Brothers out and becoming the sole owner of the company where he remained until he retired.

He was a past member of the board of directors of the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in creating the Ham Days festival. He was also a long time member of the American Legion Post 49. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a founding member of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Margie Paris Evans; and three sisters, Quennie Ferrell, Kathryn Byrnes and Lillian Kardos.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Kathryn Dye Evans of Lebanon; two daughters, Burma (Jimmy) Medley of Loretto, KY, George Ann (Earl) Burton of Frankfort, KY; two sons, Bill (Cindy) Evans of Lebanon and Glenn Evans of Lexington; one brother, I.W. Evans of Lebanon; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at the Bosley Funeral Home in Lebanon officiated by Dr. David Whitlock. Burial is in the St. Augustine Church Cemetery.

Visitation is after 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Marion County Animal Shelter.

The Bosley Funeral Home in Lebanon is in charge of the arrangements.
