Obituary: Billy Darryl Mattingly, 78, Lebanon
Billy Darryl Mattingly, 78, of Lebanon, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He is remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and humble servant of Jesus Christ. He was born in Washington County to George Arthur and Geneva Votaw Mattingly. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1955.
He spent most of his working life as a heavy equipment operator and enjoyed giving bulldozer rides to children when he excavated their family farms. In his youth he worked long and hard alongside his parents and sisters on the family farm on McElroy Pike. In high school he was an exceptional football running back known for his ability to charge through defense instead of running around it. He was honored as Mr. LHS and was homecoming king his senior year. Offered a scholarship to play football at Eastern Kentucky University he chose instead to marry the love of his life, Pansy Mae Maupin on June 25, 1955. They celebrated more than 59 years of happiness together.
Known for his extraordinary work ethic, strength and endurance, he started each morning at sun up and worked until sun down. He took pride in the farmland he purchased over the years and spent countless hours mowing and improving the property. He enjoyed hanging out with friends in all the small communities of the county and spent many mornings eating breakfast and trading stories with friends at Country Kitchen and Cedarwood restaurants.
He served as a deacon at Stewart’s Creek Baptist Church for many years and considered himself blessed among God’s men. He was a tremendous role model and lived a life that showed the importance of pleasing and honoring God. He will be greatly missed by his wife, daughters, son-in-laws, grandchildren, and many other dear friends and family members.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Arthur Mattingly, mother, Geneva Votaw Mattingly, and nephew, Gregory Mattingly.
Although he was an accomplished businessman, Billy Darryl’s proudest accomplishments was his wonderful family. He was father and hero to three loving daughters, Pamela Dunster, Angela (Michael) Holt, and Paula (Marcus) Cassidy. He was also survived by two sisters, Doris Collier and Joann Mattingly; eight grandchildren, Bradley (Melissa) Wiser, Stuart (Kate) Wiser, Ellen Holt, Emily Holt, Elyssa Holt, Madison Cassidy, Ryker Cassidy and Ireland Cassidy; and three great-grandchildren, Jack Wiser, Sam Wiser and Lucille Wiser.
