Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, 10:50 a.m. — For county residents who have lost power, lack heat in their weather_temphomes or simply need a place to warm up, the Nelson County Civic Center, 321 S. Third St. in Bardstown is now open as a warming center.

In an email earlier Thursday, Emergency Management Director Joe Prewitt said the warming center will be open today and overnight tonight for those who need a warm place to get out of the below-zero temperatures Thursday night and into Friday morning.

Warming centers are opened during periods of extreme cold. While they often target the homeless, they also serve residents who have lost power, heat in their homes, or motorists who may be temporarily stranded.
