Monday, March 9, 2015, 9 p.m. — Nelson County will participate Tuesday morning in a statewide tornado drill. At approximately 10:07 a.m., local tornado sirens will sound, weather alert radios will activate, and TV and radio stations and mobile devices will broadcast the alert.
Outdoor sirens across Nelson County will sound; if a siren near your location fails to operate, residents are asked to report it to Nelson County Dispatch, (502) 348-3211.
Outdoor sirens are not designed to warn indoor inhabitants. For the safety of one’s family at night when a TV or radio is not on, a battery-backed weather alert radio is the most effective way to monitor severe weather watches and warnings at any time of day or night.
The state’s division of Emergency Management encourages everyone to participate, including individuals, businesses, hospitals, nursing homes, educators and government agencies. The idea is to practice a tornado safety plan and update an emergency plan that considers all types of hazards.
The month of March was proclaimed as “Severe Weather Awareness Month in Kentucky” by Gov. Steve Beshear to highlight the need for people to be weather-ready as severe weather season approaches.
Homes and businesses alike should have and should monitor weather alert radios, which automatically transmit NWS severe weather watches and warnings 24 hours a day.
If you do not have a tornado plan in place at your home, Kentucky Emergency Management offers these guidelines:
- Designate a tornado shelter in an interior room on the lowest level of a building, away from windows.
- Basements are best, but, if there is no basement, choose an interior bathroom, closet or other enclosed space on the lowest level of a building.
- Tell everyone where the designated shelter is and post the location.
