Obituary: Joseph Harold Hicks, 84, Bardstown

JOSEPH HAROLD HICKS

 

Joseph Harold Hicks, 84, of Bardstown, died peacefully Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Flaget Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 17, 1931, in New Haven to William Oscar and Anna Mae Greenwell Hicks. He was a 1948 graduate of Holy Cross High School. He worked for Simpson Motor Company prior to joining the U.S. Air Force later that year. He served during the Korean War and was a lifelong member of American Legion Post 121 in Bardstown. He spent a year at Bellarmine College and then worked for Jim Beam Distilling Company for 32 years.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Robert “CR” Hicks.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret J. Hicks of Bardstown; four daughters, Shelly Cusick of Clarksville, Tenn., Connie Royalty, Angela Billings and Kristie Hicks Crenshaw, all of Louisville; three sons, Joseph H. Hicks II of San Angelo, Texas, Mark Hicks of Bardstown, and Linwood Allsbrook of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; one brother, William Stanley (Barbara Ann Simpson) Hicks of Holy Cross; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday, April 2, 2015, at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home in Bardstown with burial at St. Thomas Cemetery. A bereavement dinner will follow the burial at St. Joseph Fellowship Hall, 310 West Stephen Foster Avenue, Bardstown.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2015, and 8:30-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with an American Legion service by Post 121 at 6:30.

The pallbearers are Joseph H. Hicks II, Mark Hicks, Adam Hicks, John Wayne Hicks, Eddie Hicks, Greg Billings, Chad Rimpsey and Brooks Crenshaw.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, www.parkinson.org; the American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org; or St. Joseph Church in Bardstown.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
