Tuesday, May 5, 2015 — Meeting in regular session this morning, Judge Executive Dean Watts gave Nelson Fiscal Court an update on an upcoming state paving project that will affect East Stephen Avenue from KY 49 (Loretto Road) to the US150-KY 245 intersection.

The project will repave Springfield Road from McDonalds to the Walmart area, Watts told the court. The paving in that stretch of US150 is deteriorating and in need of repair, he said. The project should begin within the next few weeks. A second part of the project will resurface the overpass and repave Springfield Road past Maywood.

In other news affecting US150, the state Transportation Cabinet has scheduled a public hearing for 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, regarding future improvements on US150 between Bardstown and Springfield. That meeting will be held in the Fellowship Hall at Parkway Baptist Church.

DUMPSTER PURCHASE APPROVED. The court approved a request by Landfill Manager Brad Spalding to purchase 19 new large commercial dumpsters at a cost of $18,210. The dumpsters are provided to the county’s commercial garbage customers.

Spalding said the dumpsters are usually repaired if they can be serviceable. At some point, they must be replaced, he said.

ROAD DEPARTMENT REPORT. County engineer Jim Lemieux told fiscal court that construction is under way on the new salt barn. The new barn will hold three times more salt that the previous one, and will allow the county to purchase enough salt to last all winter.

The new barn will have a concrete foundation and a curved membrane roof. The old salt barn was demolished in order to make room to build the new one.

In other business, Nelson Fiscal Court:

— approved a proclamation setting  May 2015 as Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Awareness Month;

— approved a proclamation setting May 2015 as Building Safety Month.

NEXT UP. Nelson Fiscal Court will next meet at 9 a.m. on May 19, primary election day.
