Grand jury indicts local man in robberies of three Bardstown banks

Saturday, May 23, 2015, 1:45 p.m. — The Bardstown man arrested in connection with three recent bank robberies was indicted Wednesday, May 20, 2015, by a Nelson County grand jury.

David Wayne Smith, 8/1/63, Bardstown, was charged with robbery, first-degree, theft by unlawful taking and tampering with physical evidence in connection with each robbery — the March 13 robbery of the North Third Street branch of Your Community Bank, the April 16 robbery of the West John Rowan branch of Your Community Bank, and the April 23 robbery of the Wilson & Muir Bank branch on Culpepper Street.

According to the indictments, of the three robberies Smith is alleged to have committed, the Wilson & Muir robbery netted the largest amount of cash — more than $11,896 — all of which police said was recovered the day Smith was arrested at a Bardstown home. The March 13 robbery netted approximately $2,992 and the April 13 robbery netted approximately $2,300. At the time Smith was arrested, police said the believed the money taken in the earlier robberies was gone.

The indictments state Smith allegedly threatened the use of physical force during the robberies, and after the robberies he allegedly hid the clothing he wore.

Bail was set at $100,000 cash only, plus conditions. He is set for arraignment on June 4, 2015, in Nelson Circuit Court.
