Thursday, May 28, 2015, 1:30 p.m. — Bardstown Police, Bloomfield Police and the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office responded about 1 p.m. Thursday for a report of an aircraft in trouble that landed approximately 15 miles east of Bardstown on the Bluegrass Parkway.
Louisville media report the pilot, Robert Kinion, of Chester, S.C. had just purchased the Grumman American AA-5A single-engine plane from its owner in Bedford, Ind, two days ago. While flying at 5,500 feet on his way back to South Carolina, Kinion began having engine trouble. Unable to make the nearest airport, he decided to land on KY 555 near the Bluegrass Parkway exit in Washington County.
Local law enforcement received word of the aircraft in trouble through the Kentucky State Police, and officers checked the BG between Bardstown and Bloomfield, as well as a private airstrip on Yates-Cooney Neck Road. While officers continued their search, KSP troopers located the downed aircraft. Officers from Bloomfield and the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office continued to the scene to assist KSP with traffic control.
The airplane was loaded on a flatbed tow truck and with KSP providing traffic control, it was transported to the Lebanon-Springfield Airport.
There was no official report on possible injuries from the crash.
