Alabama man charged with DUI after crashing car in construction zone

Thursday, June 18, 2015, 10 a.m. — An Alabama man was arrested Wednesday night following complaints that he was driving his 2011 Mercedes in a reckless manner.

dui_arrestMichael Clayton Thomas, 22, of Gulf Shores, Ala., was charged with driving under the influence and first-degree wanton endangerment after he is alleged to have nearly struck one car head-on and later crashed his car in the East John Rowan construction area while intoxicated.

At 9:30 p.m., Nelson County Dispatch received the first of a series of phone complaints about the red Mercedes driving recklessly on East John Rowan Boulevard and possibly driving under the influence. A second caller reported the vehicle crashed in the construction zone in the area of the R. J. Corman railroad crossing.

Officers located the car, which had struck six traffic cones and hit the curb several times before it all four wheels were destroyed and the vehicle was immobile. The driver and a passenger were reported walking on foot toward Buffalo Wings & Rings restaurant.

Officers located Thomas and passenger in the restaurant parking lot. A police department press release states Thomas smelled of alcohol beverages, his speech was slurred and he was unable to stand straight. While police were attempting field sobriety tests, Thomas told officers he was too intoxicated to do the test.

He was arrested and lodged in the Nelson County Jail.
