Thunderstorm’s lightning strikes keep city, county fire departments busy

Monday, July 20, 2015, 1:26 a.m. — The thunderstorms that passed through Nelson County Sunday evening

At 5:48 p.m., the Bardstown Fire Department responded to a report of a building behind a home in the 100 block of Scenic Drive that took was allegedly struck by lightning. When firefighters arrived they found light smoke coming from the building. Firefighters reported the fire under control by 6:15 p.m.

While crews were wrapping up their work on Scenic Drive, the Bardstown-Nelson County Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 6:24 p.m. to the 100 block of Venetian Way for a report of a house struck by lightning with the residents reporting a burning smell inside the home. Firefighters who were responding from the fire station were joined by firefighters leaving Scenic Drive. Firefighters determined lightning strike the area but found no fire outside the home. A tree outside the home suffered lightning damage. Firefighters cleared the scene at 6:52 p.m.

The thunderstorms that rolled through the county prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warming from about 5:50 to 6:20 p.m.
