Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, 2 a.m. (UPDATED 3 a.m.) — An abandoned home on 105 East Forrest Ave. was heavily damaged by a fire believed to have been intentionally set early Thursday morning.

The Bardstown Fire Department was dispatched just after midnight Wednesday for a structure fire that was spotted by individuals across North Third Street at the Wendy’s restaurant. The unoccupied home had been abandoned for a substantial amount of time and had suffered regular vandalism. Most of the home’s windows were boarded up or smashed in, and the home was frequently broken into.

Firefighters asked police to respond due to the suspicious nature of the fire, and the fact two smaller fires had been set earlier in the evening. Police had been looking for two juveniles suspected of starting the earlier fires.

A 29-year-old firefighter who suffered a minor injury was transported from the scene by Nelson County EMS to Flaget Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment of a possible ankle injury.

Firefighters reported control of the fire at 1:08 a.m., and remained on the scene until just after 3 a.m.
