Daughters, Sons of American Revolution to honor Capt. Samuel Pottinger

Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, 8 p.m. — Cox’s Station Chapter, NSDAR, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Governor Isaac Shelby Chapter, logo1.red.borderSons of the American Revolution, will have a commemorative marking for Revolutionary War soldier Capt. Samuel Pottinger at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Pottinger Family Cemetery, 4394 New Hope Road, New Haven.

Capt. Samuel Pottinger is buried in the Cox’s Creek Cemetery and has never been officially recognized with DAR and SAR markers by the Daughters of the American Revolution or the Sons of the American Revolution as a Revolutionary War soldier. The descendants of Capt. Pottinger wanted him recognized as having reached the rank of Captain under George Rogers Clark in the Revolutionary War, and wanted him recognized in Pottingers early station site.

His VA burial marker in Cox’s Creek Cemetery has his rank as a Private. He was staying with his daughter at the time of his death and was buried in Cox’s Creek Cemetery .

sarlogo.32185049_stdThe Pottinger family will have their 51st family reunion that day with a meal at noon and then attend the marking at 2 p.m. A reunion crowd of 150 is expected to attend and pay homage to Captain Samuel, as he is affectionately called by his family.

There will be a flag color guard and flag folding ceremony, as well as a 21-gun black powder gun salute by the Governor Isaac Shelby Chapter KYSSAR. Many DAR and SAR chapters from across the country will be represented by the Captain Samuel Pottinger families.

The marking will take place near the site of the early pioneer station, Pottinger’s Station, where so many families emigrated from Maryland into Kentucky in the late 1770s.

The event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. Please bring a lawn chair and join us.
