Bardstown man arrested Wednesday on weapon, endangerment charges

Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015 — A Bardstown man threatening suicide was taken into custody by police Wednesday afternoon after he fired a handgun through the roof of a car during a struggle with a woman.

Walter Ray Schooling Jr., 33, was arrested by police and charged with wanton endangerment, first-degree, and being a felon in possession of a handgun.

The incident began when Bardstown Police were dispatched at 3:49 Wednesday afternoon to the 100 block of Valley View Drive on a complaint of a man threatening suicide. When officers arrived, they learned that Schooling had gone home and retrieved a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and gotten in a vehicle. A woman attempted to take the handgun from Schooling, and the gun fired a round through the vehicle’s roof during the struggle.

Schooling fled the area on foot, and was arrested without incident on Fern Lea Circle. Police located the gun and seven rounds of ammunition in the vehicle.

Schooling was lodged in the Nelson County Jail. Detective Lynn Davis investigated the incident.
