Obituary: Frances Josephine Edelen, 90, Bardstown
Frances Josephine Edelen, 90, of Bardstown, died Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, in Louisville. She was born April 25, 1925, in Washington County to the late John Bradley and Mary Theresa Yates Wimsatt.
In her education she received her bachelor’s degree from Spalding College and her masters from Western Kentucky University. She was a former teacher at St. Joseph Elementary and retired after 18 years of service. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she served many roles, including church organist, altar society, parish council, and tour guide. She spent 16 years working part-time as a tour guide at the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Robert Edelen; one son, Joseph Robert Edelen Jr.; one sister, Louise Thompson; and three brothers, Leon Wimsatt, John “Johnnyā€¯ Wimsatt Jr. and Gene Wimsatt.
She is survived by four daughters, Mary (Don) Wood and Geri Edelen, both of Louisville, Helen Abbott of Marrero, La. and Caroline Downs of Bardstown; two sons, Ray Edelen of Bardstown and Gerard (Susan) Edelen of Crestwood; four sisters, Geri (John) Werkman, Marie Grigsby and Mary Wimsatt, all of Bardstown and Barbara (Carl) Nett of Louisville; two brothers, Bev (Mary Annette) Wimsatt and Arthur Wimsatt, both of Bardstown, Ed (Pauline) Wimsatt of Concord, N.H., and Earl(Rosie) Wimsatt of Fairborn, Ohio; five grandchildren, Emily, Keith, Kelsey, Michael and Alicia; two great-grandsons; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with the Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, and after 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road in Bardstown. A prayer service is 7 p.m. Thursday.
Expressions of sympathy can be made in the form of contributions to St. Joseph School or to St. Joseph Church.
