Obituary: Charles Joseph ‘Chuck’ Brauch, 92, Bardstown

Charles Joseph “Chuck” Brauch, 92, of Bardstown, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, at Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown. He was born May 25, 1923, in Covington to the late Charles L. and Bernadette Linneman Brauch.

He graduated from St. Xavier High School and Xavier University in Cincinnati. He and his family moved to Bardstown in 1966. In 1969, he became the plant manager of Barton Brands until his retirement in 1989. He served as chairman of the board of the Kentucky Distillers Association and he was instrumental in keeping the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History in Bardstown.

He served his country in World War II and retired as a major in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was involved in many civic and other activities during his lifetime which include serving on the Bardstown City Council and one term as the city’s mayor. He was a member of Bardstown Metropolitan Parks and Recreation Board, a board member of the Housing Authority of Bardstown, and served as president of the Kentucky League of Cities. He served on Nazareth Village I board of directors,

He was a member and chairman of the Bardstown Independent Schools board of education and served as the vice-president and president of the Kentucky School Board Association (the first board member from Bardstown to do so). He was one of the original board members on the Bardstown Foundation for Excellence in Public Education. He was named Citizen of the Year in 1985 by the Bardstown Chamber of Commerce and was a Kentucky Colonel.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Chapter 1290, American Legion Post 121. He was a member of the first board of trustees at Flaget Memorial Hospital served on the North Central Comprehensive Care Board (now known as Communicare), which allowed him to provide support and leadership in the creation of the Tom McKay Group Home, Nelson County Industries and the Child Development Center. He also served as a member of the Tom McKay Center advisory board.

He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, James and Ro Brauch.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Hellmann Brauch; two daughters, Carol Holt of Frankfort and Suzanne (Linnie) Thomas of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sons, Charles Stephen Brauch of Independence and David Brauch of Bardstown;

nine grandchildren, Bridgette (Joe) Miller, Jason (Emily) Cheek, Stephanie (Aaron) Wagner, Douglas (Mariela) Brauch, Kimberly (Brian) Harvey, Nathan Holt, Bennett Thomas, William Motshwane, Boyzzz Khumalo.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with the Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6 p.m..

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Nelson County Industries or the Guthrie Opportunity Center Foundation.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road, Bardstown, is in charge of arrangements.
