Two charged with golf car theft from OKH state park golf course

Monday, Nov. 9, 2015 — Two men were arrested late Wednesday, Nov. 4 after police investigated the theft of a golf care from the golf course at My Old Kentucky Home State Park.

Joseph J. Upson, 18, of Bardstown and Roy E. Covington, 18, were arrested and charged with theft by unlawful taking, $500 or more but under $10,000. Additionally, Upson was charged with third-degree burglary and tampering with physical evidence. The men were lodged in the Nelson County Jail.

The investigation began when police received a call of a suspicious looking persons who were loading a golf cart onto a trailer towed by a white Jeep Cherokee. An eye-witness followed the suspects through town and lost sight of them on South Third Street near St. Monica Catholic church.

Officers located the Jeep and trailer at a home at 1559 Lutheran Church Road, though the golf cart was not on the trailer. Officers determined the suspects had unloaded and hidden the golf cart in the area near the Willett distillery located south of the state park on KY 49, the Loretto Road.

Police say the suspects stole a pair of bolt cutters from a golf course maintenance shed and but the lock on the storage building in order to take the golf cart. After the suspects realized they were being followed, the hid the golf cart. The golf cart was recovered and returned to the state park.
