Optimist Club of Bardstown offering essay, oratorical scholarships

Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015 — The Optimist Club of Bardstown announced that it will again sponsor scholarship contests for area students. The contests are open to students 17 or younger as of Oct. 1, 2015.
ESSAY CONTEST. The annual Optimist Essay Contest asks students to compose a 700- to 800-word essay response to the prompt, “Lead by Example: Reality or Fiction”. The contest is designed to develop writing and critical thinking skills.
Local prizes are one $200 scholarship for first place, $100 second place and $50 third place. The winner at the District level is awarded one scholarship of $2,500 by Optimist International each year. A total of $2,850 in scholarship funds will be awarded.

ORATORICAL CONTEST. The annual Oratorical Contest has been great expanded in scope for this year. Students are required to prepare a 4- to 5-
minute speech on the topic of “How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others.” This contest is designed to assist youth in gaining public speaking experience.
Two $100 prizes will be awarded locally for first place; $50 for second place and $25 for third place. Two winners at the District level will receive $2,500 scholarships, and go on to compete for a $5000 scholarship at the Regional level. At the International level there are three scholarships ($5,000, $10,000 and $15,000). A total of $41,175 in scholarship funds will be awarded.
