Magistrates Bernard Ice, left, and Sam Hutchins discuss a matter prior to the start of Tuesday’s fiscal court meeting.

Former Bardstown Mayor Harry Spalding brought the idea to Watts’ attention, and Watts told the court about the preliminary plans for the monument.

The proposed monument will list the names of roughly 75 Nelson County residents who died serving their country during World War II.

The Old Courthouse grounds already has a monument honoring those who died during the Vietnam War, Watts told the court. There’s room to place the proposed monument on the east side of the Old Courthouse near the existing Vietnam memorial.

The World War II memorial is still in the concept stages, but Watts said he believed the project worthy of the county’s support and promised to pursue it in the coming year.

HOLIDAY GARBAGE PICKUP. Landfill Manager Brad Spalding said the Christmas holiday will push garbage collection back one day. All Friday garbage routes will be run on Saturday, Dec. 26. County garbage customers are asked to get their garbage set out by 7 a.m. Saturday.

Garbage pickup will run the same schedule for the New Year’s holiday.

In other action, fiscal court:

— approved bond renewals for county employees.

— requested EMS Director Joe Prewitt survey surrounding counties’ ambulance charges to compare Nelson County EMS rates.

— approved Nelson County Sheriff Ed Mattingly’s 2016 budget. Of the proposed $1.6 million budget, $959,700 is for salaries, overtime, retirement and benefits. The budget includes the purchase and equipment for two new police vehicles.
